We live in a generation where we don’t respect the same values as we did before. We don’t respect relationship boundaries, each other; we don’t even show respect in times of death. There was once a time where grief followed the loss of a human being. Now it’s followed by mocking comments, jokes about the person or how they passed, saying “it was expected”, or stating reasons why someone shouldn’t be as mourned as they are.
When I was little, I remember my dad speaking to so many random people while we were out; just saying “hi” where ever we were. I always wondered “how does he know so many people”, when in actuality he didn’t know them, but was being polite and respectful. Does anyone else realize how older people are always smiling and waving? I’m surrounded by people who will have a full blown conversation with me one day and the next, walk right past me on the way to class, like they’ve never seen my before.
I remember when cheating was taboo; something people creeped around to do. Now girls openly flirt with guys who they know have girlfriends, in public, on the internet; no respect for the relationship at all. I’ve heard people assume that relationships where both parties are happy, involve cheating of some sort. It’s sad. I mean, times are constantly changing and soon nothing will be taboo at all. But the respect we had for each other as individuals is just… dwindling away, in general.
